Gold smuggling network: 483 arrested in 46 months

KATHMANDU, June 13: Nepal is becoming an easy hub for the gold smugglers. According to the latest data from Nepal Police, in the last 46 months, 483 smugglers and porters have been arrested so far. During the same time, police have recovered 426.18 kilos of gold from major entry points of the country including Tatopani, Rasuwagadhi and Tribhuvan International Airport.

Till mid-May of the current fiscal year, 97 people have been arrested and 86.852 kilos of illegal gold has been discovered so far. Following the detention of major smugglers in Nepal, based on the investigation, it has been revealed that the bulk amounts of gold are being smuggled to India through several points of Nepal-India border. International smugglers are using Nepal as a transit point for the illegal trading of the yellow metal to India from China. According to the investigation, the gold imported directly from Switzerland and Africa to China is being smuggled in the international market making Russia and Nepal as a major transit point.

According to the spokesperson of Nepal Police DIG Bishwa Raj Pokharel, the police have started monitoring the illegal transport of the gold from international markets through Nepal to India and third markets.
