BARA, June 11: Consumers, who reached the Kalaiya-based distribution center of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) on Monday with their grievances, were beaten up by the staffers.

According to the District Police Office (DPO), Bara, three consumers were injured after they were beaten up by the staffers of the distribution center. Reportedly, they were beaten up with bamboo canes. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ranjit Singh Rathor of the DPO informed Republica that Ram Bihari Raut Ahir, Birendra Yadav and Rajesh Prasad of Kalaiya-9, Rampur, were injured in the incident.

The injured are currently undergoing treatment at the District Hospital in Kalaiya. As informed by DSP Rathor, the consumers and staffers of the center had a dispute which changed into a clash. Preliminary investigation shows that the locals provoked the staffers for a fight. However, instead of taking legal action the staffers themselves started beating the consumers with bamboo sticks.

Locals of Rampur encircled the center demanding compensation after high-voltage electricity damaged their TVs, refrigerators, fans and other electrical appliances. A local Suresh Kushwaha claims that the staffers of the distribution center attacked the agitating locals with bamboo canes when they were staging a sit-in in front of the main gate of the office.

A group of around 50 youths had assembled at the front gate of the office at around 11 am for staging the protest. Meanwhile, Gajendra Chaudhary, chief of the center, accused the locals of thrashing his staffers when he was in Katmandu for the treatment of one of his staffers.

He shared that this incident has discouraged his workers who have been working day and night to resume the electricity supply disrupted by a storm.
