Youths beat up mayor for not giving Eid donation

RAUTAHAT, June 6: Shekh Shakil Akhtar, the mayor of Rajpur Municipality was beaten up by a group of local youths on Tuesday evening allegedly for not giving donation for Eid celebration. The mayor was attacked at a mosque where he had gone for namaz prayers.

Mayor Akhtar had gone to nearby Mahumudiya mosque on Tuesday evening when he was attacked by a group of five youths led by twenty-year old Shekh Kasim, according to Akhtar. It has been learnt that the youths had asked the mayor for donation to organize a celebration function on the occasion of Wednesday's Eid.

The youths had reportedly approached the mayor for donation on Tuesday morning and he had promised to give them some money in the evening. 

But in the evening when the youths came asking for money, the mayor told them he had not brought any money. This reportedly angered the youths and they attacked him.

According to Mayor Akhtar, the youths hit him with a torchlight in the head and beat him up. He said he promised to pay them on Wednesday morning, but they did not listen and attacked him. 

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nabin Karki, who is also the spokesperson of the District Police Office (DPO), Rautahat, informed Republica that Mayor Akhtar, who received injury in the head, was first taken to Gaur Hospital for treatment and was later referred to Birgunj for further treatment. 
He has already returned home after treatment.

DSP Karki said the youths involved in the attack are at large and police have intensified search for them.
