DAILEKH, June 4: Tek Raj Puri, 29, a resident of Bhairawi Municipality-4, has been sentenced to 38 years in jail after he was convicted of selling his wife and son in Bangaluru, India.

The victims were rescued from Bangaluru and taken to Kathmandu on August 19 last year where they received relief from Shakti Nepal. Through efforts and pressure from Shakti Nepal itself, the District Attorney Office, Dailekh, filed a case under human trafficking against Puri.

After 10 months of the filing of the case, the Dailekh District Court delivered a verdict, slapping a fine of Rs 330,000 and imprisonment of more than 38 years.

A single bench of district judge Sanat Chandra Lawat delivered the verdict. The convict has also been ordered to provide Rs 165,000 to the victims in compensation. The decision was passed according to the Human Trafficking and Transportation (Control) Act.

Police had started an investigation after the case was filed on May 7, 2018 under human trafficking, accusing Puri of selling the victims for IRS 220,000.
