KATHMANDU, May 29: The contractors building the Dharahara tower, which was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake, have informed that the work on the raft foundation of the new tower has been started.  A raft foundation, also called a mat foundation, is a continuous slab resting on the soil that extends over the entire footprint of the building.

CEO of the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) Sushil Gyewali inspected the construction work on Tuesday. The project manager of the contractor company GIETC-Raman Joint Venture (JV), Shyam Chandra Shrestha, said during the inspection that the raft foundation work has been started. The JV has agreed to complete the tower construction at the cost of Rs 3.5 billion.

Shrestha said the construction is going on satisfactorily and support from the locals will be essential for a timely completion of the project. “If the local communities provide us more assistance, the work could catch more pace.”
