Banke's Narainapur now calm after Friday clash

BANKE, May 18: The Narainapur area in the district remained tense until Friday night after police arrested Deviwin Bishwokarma, an Indian national on the charge of involving in marijuana smuggling.

A group of Indians from a neighboring settlement across the border had entered Nepal and picketed the police station, calling for releasing the detained Indian man. A special police squad from Nepalgunj mobilized to control drug trafficking had arrested him and also confiscated a cache of marijuana from him. He was brought to Nepalgunj on Friday night for further investigation.

The agitated group also threw rocks at another police team that reached Narainapur to prepare a report on this. A motorcycle and a vehicle of the Area Police Office, Bhagawanpur have been vandalized by the mob, police said.

According to police, the situation became further tense after the locals also joined the Indian youths in the picketing and vandalism. More than 400 people had picketed the police station, it is learned. The police had to open 65 rounds of blank fire after the mob started throwing stones at and vandalizing the police station, officiating chief of the Banke district police, Deputy Superintendent Prakash Sapkota, said.

According to him, the situation in Narainapur has been contained and its calm now. Additional police have been deployed to prevent any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, attempts for the assault were also made on the members of a team comprising a state lawmaker Krishna KC 'Namuna'. The team was on an on-site visit to the Nayagaon, Khayarbhatti among other settlements, close to the border with India, for taking stock of the situation of the area for the formulation of the development plan. The agitators had picketed the team for nearly four hours and the police had to rescue it.
