FNJ stages sit-in protest against proposed media law in capital

 Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), the umbrella organization of Nepali journalists, has staged a sit-in protest against the proposed Media Council Bill in the capital on Friday. During the demonstration held at New Baneswor, media persons demanded immediate changes in the proposed Media Council Bill. The FNJ has been holding a series of protests against some of the provisions included in the bills formulated by the government to change media laws.

RJPN unaware regarding lawmaker Miya’s controversial visit to Latvia

Rashtriya Janata Party Nepal said on Friday that it was unaware regarding its lawmaker Iqbal Miya’s visit to Latvia to participate in the event related to ‘free-Tibet movement’. In a press statement after a meeting of the RJPN presidium held in the capital, the party expressed unawareness regarding the controversial visit of its lawmaker. The party’s response comes amid controversy over RJPN lawmaker Miya and Samajbadi Party Nepal (SPN) lawmaker Pradip Yadav for their participation in a function linked to free-Tibet movement in Latvia.

20 arrested for illegally entering Dolpa to pick Yarsagumba

Twenty smugglers were arrested from Yarsha Patan of Dolpa district who reached there to pick Yarsagumba without permission. According to officiating conservation officer at Shey-Phoksundo National Park, Pramod Kumar Yadav, a joint team of Nepal Army, Shey Phoksundo National Park officials and Nepal Police arrested 16 men and 4 women from the Dhadha Chaur Yarsha Patan of Shey-Phokshundo National Park for trying to smuggle the Yarsagumba. All the arrested are from Jumla district. 

NEA Chief Ghising blasts locals obstructing Trishuli III B construction 

A viral video on social media shows Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority Kulman Ghising exchanging a heated debate with local residents at the site of ongoing Upper Trishuli III B hydropower project at Pairabesi in Nuwakot district. In the viral video, Ghising looks furious with a group of locals after they ‘deliberately’ obstructed ongoing hydropower project demanding immediate compensation for the damage caused by the projects in their locality.

Taiwan parliament to vote on same-sex marriage legislation

Amid deep divisions, Taiwan's parliament has begun debating measures to legalise same-sex marriage before a landmark vote that could make the self-ruled island the first in Asia to adopt such legislation. Hundreds of gay rights supporters on Friday gathered despite heavy rain near the parliament building in the capital, Taipei, as legislators were set to vote on a series of bills that could offer same-sex couples similar legal protections for marriage as heterosexuals.

UEFA aim to double number of women players by 2024

European soccer’s governing body UEFA launched a five-year plan for women’s football on Friday, aiming to double the number of women and girls playing the sport by 2024. The strategy aims to raise the number of women and girls playing soccer in UEFA’s 55 member associations to 2.5 million and significantly boost the profile and value of the women’s European Championship and Champions League.
