BANKE, May 1: State 5 social development minister Sudarshan Baral has said cultural campaigning is necessary to increase public awareness against violence against women.

In his address to a regional (western) women conference kicked off today in Nepalgunj, the state minister said our customs and culture were not women-friendly, thus a cultural revolution was needed to modify such practices. The conference is attended by working women and women rights activists.

He asserted that future programmes and policies of the government should focus on minimizing discriminations against women based on different grounds including sex and gender.

Action Aid Nepal’s executive director Sujita Mathema voiced for equality in thinking and action so as to build an equitable-society. The dream of development would unmet if the issues being faced by half population of the world continued to be overlooked, she added. RSS
