APF, Police win volleyball titles

NEPALGUNJ, April 25: Departmental teams Armed Police Force (APF) Club and Nepal Police Club have lifted the men’s and women’s titles respectively in volleyball at the Eighth National Games in Nepalgunj on Wednesday. 

At the newly-constructed Shukra Volleyball Stadium in Khajura, Police defeated the other departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club in the men’s final, while APF beat Province 3 in the women’s final to win the gold medals. 

In the women’s final, Saraswati Chaudhary-inspired APF easily beat Province 3 with 3-0. National team player Pratibha Mali could not showcase her usual game for Province 3 as APF defeated the team 25-11, 23-13, 25-19.

Chaudhary was named the best player in APF’s final win and was rewarded with Rs 10,000 from the late Laxmi Narayan Shrestha Volleyball Trust.  In the third-place match in women’s category, Police saw off Gandaki Province 3-0. In the men’s final, Police overcame Army as it missed its most important spiker Man Bahadur Shrestha in the tournament.  

In the highly-competitive match, Police prevailed despite Army presenting a formidable challenge. Police won the first set 25-18, but Army quickly brought the game back to its stride as it won the second set 25-23. Police won the third set 25-20 and ended Army’s title charge with a 25-18 fourth set win. 

Police’s Kul Bahadur Thapa was adjudged the best player of the tournament and was given Rs 10,000. 

In the category’s third-place match, APF beat Gandaki 3-2.
