KATHMANDU, Sept 23: The students who plagiarize or hire others to prepare their thesis work that is mandatory for the completion of master's degree at Tribhuvan University (TU) will have a tough time defending it as the university is planning to have a system in place within a few months to make a more intense scrutiny of the academic work.

According to TU authority, it has formed a team to look into the matter following a media report about growing misconduct such as copying, plagiarizing and hiring persons to prepare thesis.

“We have taken the issue very seriously,” said Prof Tirtha Raj Khaniya, vice chancellor of TU. “Now we want the reaserch study to be more academic and genuinely intellectual.” The Office of Vice Chancellor has recently formed a five-member committee to study the issue and submit its recommendations to the TU authority. The committee headed by Prof Bhim Subedi includes members Prof Lok Narayan Jha, Prof Ram Bahadur Chhetri, Prof Ananda Sharma and Associate Prof Giri Raj Tripathi.

Prof Subedi said that the committee held its first meeting with VC Khaniya on Thursday and discussed how to study the irregularities in the thesis controversy. “We will submit our report to the VC Office as soon as possible,” he said. After the report is submitted, new rules and policies will be formulated to address the issues raised by controversy, said VC Khaniya.
