Stricter sentence proposed against citizenship forgery

KATHMANDU, March 14: The punishment and fine regarding provisions of the citizenship have been made further stricter. A meeting of the State Affairs Committee (SAC) of the Federal Parliament held on Thursday took a decision to this effect.

According to the decision, if a foreigner obtains Nepali citizenship without fulfilling processes, he will have to face a jail term of five to seven years along with a fine of Rs. 300,000.

Similarly, if the citizenship is obtained by submitting false details, he/she will be sentenced to one to three years in jail along with a fine of Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 300,000.

Similarly, those who forge a copy of citizenship will be sentenced to three to five years in jail along with a fine of Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 300,000.

Likewise, he/she will have to face a jail term of six months to one-and-a-half years along with a fine of Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 100,000.

Similarly, those who obtain more than one citizenships will be sentenced to three to five years in jail along with a fine of Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 300,000.

The committee has drafted a new proposal by amending the previous provisions. A clause-wise deliberation on the Bill of Citizenship is underway at the State Affairs Committee of the parliament.
