KATHMANDU, Sept 14: Today marks the 60th National Children's Day, which is being celebrated across the country. Under the theme "Investing in Children, Starting a Secure Future," National Children's Day is being observed with various events. The day has been celebrated since 19 August 1964, and it was officially observed starting from September 14, 2006.

In Nepal, Children's Day would be observed on Bhadra 4 (August 19), the birthday of former queen mother Ratna Rajyalaxmi Devi Shah, who established the Nepal Children's Organization (Bal Mandir) on Bhadra 4, 2021 BS (19 August 1964), marking the beginning of efforts to protect orphaned and vulnerable children. This day was declared National Children's Day and has been regularly celebrated since then. On November 20, 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Later, Children's Day was celebrated in reference to the day Nepal ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child on September 14, 1990. Accordingly, Nepal has been observing National Children's Day on September 14 since 2006.

The constitution guarantees children's rights as fundamental rights, encompassing child protection, child welfare, child development, and child participation, thus ensuring comprehensive development.

In line with the commitments made under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989, and other international treaties on children's rights, the government has been formulating and implementing policies and laws related to child rights.

PM pledges to end street dependency of children by 2081

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has vowed to end the street dependency of children by 2081 BS.   

In a message today on the occasion of the 60th Children's Day, the PM asserted that the children will be relieved of their condition to remain on the streets.

"Some children are obliged to remain as street children even today. We have committed to ending such a situation for children to remain on the streets by 2081 BS," PM Oli said. 

PM Oli also said that the government was making efforts to create a conducive environment for children by addressing their challenges. 

As the country is marking National Children's Day today with the slogan of "Investment in Children; Beginning of Secure Future", the PM has extended best wishes to all children and their parents at home and abroad. 

In his message, the PM has also expressed his concerns about children's rights, their health care, education and love and affection to them.
