KATHMANDU, Sept 18: United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has asked the government to extend the martyrs list and declare at least 16 others, who died in the Madhes movement last year, as martyrs.

The government in the second week of August decided to declare 52 individuals, including 11 security personnel killed during the Madhes protests, as martyrs. Though the Madhes-based parties had proposed to declare 68 individuals as martyrs, the government approved the names of only 52.

“The government is yet to declare a significant number of individuals who died during the movement last year as martyrs,” said Manish Suman, general secretary of the Sadbhavana Party, adding, “We have asked the government to declare them martyrs as well and also provide financial support to 32 who were seriously injured,  as they will need lifelong support.”

Likewise, the UDMF has handed over bills  for the expenses incurred in the treatment of injured protestors. “The government is yet to pay around Rs 8.7 million to different hospitals while around Rs 4.2 million is to be paid to the families of the injured,” claimed Suman.
The UDMF leaders met Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi on Sunday and handed over the relevent documents.
