Govt, opposition divided over Medical Education Bill's endorsement

Parliamentarian Yogesh Bhattarai from the Nepal Communist Party said that the newly endorsed and much debated Medical Education Bill was a victory of all Nepalis and Dr. Govinda KC, the medical crusader who currently is on the 17th day of his 16th fast-unto-death hunger strike.  The Nepali Congress has called the government's decision to approve the National Medical Education Bill unilateral.   

NC's sister organization vandalizes govt vehicles, 58 detained

Nepal Student Union, the sister organization of Nepali Congress, has vandalized government-owned vehicles at New Baneshwor after the government endorsed the medical education bill. "Fifty-eight protestors were arrested from New Baneshwor," SP Ashok Singh, chief of Metropolitan Police Division.  Details of damage are yet to arrive.  

Police arrest 18 leaders of Bibeksheel Nepali Party

The police on Friday arrested 18 leaders of Bibeksheel Nepali Party including its Coordinator Ujjwal Thapa who were staging the protest in front of the Federal Parliament building at New Baneshwor. Leaders of Bibeksheel Nepali Party assembled in front of the Parliament building to protest the government's bid to pass the National Medical Education Bill through the Parliament without incorporating demands raised by Dr. Govinda KC. Police arrested the demonstrators saying that they had staged a protest in a restricted zone.  

Rose stems worth Rs 15 million being imported for Valentine’s Day

One hundred sixty thousand units of rose stem worth Rs 15 million is being imported as Valentine's Day nears, up by around 3.5 million rupees. Last year, Nepal imported roses worth Rs. 12.5 million. Of the 200,000 rose stems that are sold on Valentine's Day, 160,000 are imported from India.  The price of rose was in the range of Rs 40 to 80 per unit last year. It is expected to reach in the range of Rs 50 to 100 this year, a rise of 15 percent. 

Death toll in Mexico's gasoline pipeline blast increases to 100

The number of people, who died in a gasoline pipeline explosion in Mexico's central Hidalgo state last week, has increased to 100, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) said. The previous death toll stood at 96 but on Thursday four more people died in a hospital, according to the IMSS. A total of 11 people are still being treated in hospitals.

Argentina coach hopeful Messi will return to the national team

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said he has a “good feeling” about Lionel Messi’s possible return to international soccer and will talk to the Barcelona forward about a possible return from his self-imposed exile. Messi took a sabbatical from the national side after another disappointing World Cup, with Argentina knocked out in the second round after winning just one game in four.
