DAMAK, Jan 19: People's representatives who were elected with the hope of bringing change and development in the society have been found engaging themselves in matters which have very little public importance. As the elected leaders have been busy attending feasts and functions, the service seekers have been at the receiving end while obtaining any kind of government service.

Rajendra Kumar Pokharel, mayor of Kankai Municipality, admits that he has not been able to spend much time in the office as he is obliged to attend various programs almost on a daily basis. He says it is difficult for them to refuse the invitation of the people who elected them to the post.

"It's hard for us to say no as people love us and want us to be part of their celebration. We can't afford to disappoint or irk them," said Mayor Pokharel.

This has delayed the formulation of policies and work plans, which must be done by the local unit.

"We don't even have time to execute some of our plans and policies," said Pokharel.

Most of the times he is found inaugurating programs and sometimes he is seen solving household affairs and disputes.

According to Nagendra Bhandari, chairperson of Gauradaha-1, elected representatives are having problems managing their time as they are expected to be a part of every single happening in their constituency. It has become a compulsion for ward chiefs to resolve household affairs.
