KATHMANDU, Dec 5: Major opposition Nepali Congress has urged the government to launch probe into alleged involvement of Nepalese Ambassador to Australia Lucky Sherpa in human trafficking.

In a press statement on Wednesday, the party said that it was aware of recent controversies over the ambassador’s alleged involvement in human trafficking. The NC has demanded to bring truth to the public.

“It is surprising to note that the government has still remained silent over the accusations of human trafficking by the ambassador’s aide itself,” the statement said.

The party has demanded that the ambassador should be immediately relieved of the post if she is found guilty.

During a recent television interview, the ambassador’s driver Wongchhu Sherpa had accused her and her husband of human trafficking. He had claimed that he was forced to pay millions of rupees to Ambassador Sherpa’s husband to go to Australia.

Amid controversies, the Nepalese Embassy in Australia stated that Wongchhu had fled with valuables from the embassy while the ambassador was away. Meanwhile, some members of the ruling Nepal Communist Party have also demanded action against Ambassador Sherpa.

NCP leaders Bishnu Rijal and Yubaraj Chaulagain wrote on social media that the ‘controversial ambassador’ should be immediately relieved of the post and brought to book.

Sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Republica Online that Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali was aware of the controversies. “The minister is closely looking into the matter. She might be recalled if the allegations are serious,” the source added.
