KATHMANDU, Nov 27: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has adopted strict measures to punish those throwing garbage haphazardly in the metropolis.

According to a recent notice issued by the metropolis, those found throwing garbage haphazardly will face up to three months in jail or fine up to Rs 100,000 or both in accordance to the Solid Water Management Act 2011.

KMC had circulated the notice to the denizens of the metropolis to make them aware about the rules and regulations. This, according to KMC officials, has already been implemented.

KMC has asked one and all to sincerely follow the rules and regulations. The notice was issued with the aim to make the capital city clean and beautiful, said sources at the KMC.

“The desire to make the metropolis clean and beautiful can be realized only if the citizens follow rules and regulations properly,” said KMC Spokesperson Gyanendra Karki. Citizens can lodge complaint against any such person violating the rule at KMC's toll free number 1180.

The KMC officials said the persons committing such crimes shall be given warning first, and if they repeat the same act they shall be punished as per the law.

Environment Division chief of KMC, Hari Bahadur Kunwar, said the campaign of making the city clean and beautiful has already started and that they have sent the notice to the government offices, schools and campuses in this regard.

“Those who do not follow the rules have to pay fine or get punishment based on the severity of their crime,” he said.

Officials said all public vehicles plying the streets of the capital need to put dustbin in place to collect the waste. Similarly, any kind of advertisement on the walls of the city is strictly prohibited. Street vendors will also be restricted on the road side as a part of the KMC's drive to keep the city clean and beautiful.
