KATHMANDU, Sept 21: The government and the agitating transport workers have signed an 8-point agreement.

The transport workers were agitated after the enforcement of the new Civil Code, arguing that it had provided stringent action against drivers in case of accident. The vehicular strike caused by the agitation is ending with the agreement, informed Director General of Department of Transport Management, Labanya Dhakal.

During the talk held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Friday, the government side agreed to forward the memorandum submitted by the agitated workers' committee to the Home Ministry, Ministry of Physical Infrastructures and Transport, and the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

The meeting also made agreement on fair probe on road accident, awareness and orientation to drivers and helpers, well managed parking lots for heavy vehicles along the highways, timely repair of roads and installation of traffic signals, change in traffic police behaviour, and release of those arrested in course of workers' struggle.

The transport workers had been staging protest, reasoning that the recent Civil Code had the provision of stringent action against drivers in case of road accidents resulting in human casualties.

The government secretaries were present during the talk.
