KATHMANDU, Jan 12: In a rare surgery, doctors at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj have extracted five kilograms of hemangioma from a patient’s liver.

The surgery by a team led by senior surgeon Ramesh Singh Bhandari took five hours. And it was successful in clearing the accumulation of mass in the liver of the 44-year-old patient. The surgery was performed last week.

Doctors Ninadini Shrestha, Pramesh Sundar Shrestha and Ajit Thapa among others were in the team that performed the surgery. “It was a tough call to make, but we went for it with the consent of the patient and were successful,” said Bhandari, who is also head of the Liver Transplant Unit at the hospital. The hospital is also going to begin liver transplantation service soon.
