Om and Cholendra in line for CJ as PHSC turns down Joshee

A meeting of Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee has turned down the name of acting Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee for the post of Chief Justice. Joshee's name was rejected by two-thirds majority of votes.  Of the total 15-member PHSC, ruling NCP has nine members, NC has four and Federal Socialist Forum Nepal and Rastriya Janata Party have one each.

Dhakal appointed Law Minister

Former CPN-UML Chief Whip Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal has been appointed as the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.Former Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Sher Bahadur Tamang had resigned from his post following his controversial remark that female students who go to pursue MBBS in Bangladesh have to compromise at some point to earn their degrees.

3-member probe panel formed to investigate lawmaker Niru Pal death threat

Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu has formed a three-member probe committee to look into the case related to death threat of Nepal Communist Party lawmaker Niru Pal.According to SSP Bishwo Raj Pokharel, Chief of MPRO, SP Ram Datta Joshi, DSP Govinda Kafle and Inspector Surendra KC are members in the probe panel.

TIA resumes its operation

Sharia law recognized by British court for 1st time in landmark divorce case

In the case of estranged couple Nasreen Akhtar and Mohammed Shabaz Khan, the High Court ruled that their Islamic faith marriage – nikah – is recognized by British matrimonial law despite there being no legal precedent for it to be recognized. Akhtar will subsequently be able to bring her case before the divorce court, where she can claim a share of assets from her marriage to Khan. She would have been unable to do so without the High Court ruling.
