Transitional justice reform an urgent need in Nepal

Human Rights Watch and the International Commission of Jurists issued a statement after the Nepal government shared a draft bill purportedly to amend flaws in the laws of the CEIDP and TRC Acts. The two international organizations have called on authorities to take into account concerns of all stakeholders and to ensure that the amendments comply with international human rights standards and international crimes. The current draft law fails to address the many gaps in Nepali law that make it difficult to prosecute, especially at senior levels, for international crimes such as torture and crimes against humanity.

'Committed' to improve education sector, MoE invites Dr. KC for discussions

Minister for Education, Giriraj Mani Pokhrel has urged Dr. Govinda KC to end his hunger strike and fly to Kathmandu to discussion with the government. The government is currently under immense pressure after its apathy towards Ganga Maya Adhikari, attempts to prohibit protests and the replacement of Medical Ordinance Bill for which KC is in a hunger strike.

Minister bats for 'positive regulations' on freedom of speech

Minister for Information and Technology, Gokul Baskota said that the country needed to regulate social media and online portals through necessary laws. He reiterated that the law as a way to enforce positive regulation and not a way to impede right to expression or bring totalitarian regime.  

Overload, over speed behind Mustang tipper accident: Police

Preliminary investigation by the police showed that into the tipper accident at Mustang was due to overload and over speed. Twenty workers were killed and another 12 sustained injuries at Syangboche of Lo Ghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality of Mustang last Friday.  The tipper had veered some 40 meters off the road.
