AMERICA June 27: Harry Bandari of Nepali origin has been elected as a member to the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District-8, becoming the first Nepali ever to attain such a political height in the mainstream American politics.

Bhandari has been elected as a state delegate member in the elections held today for District -8 of Meriland State representing Democratic Party.

 He won the elections leaving his rival of American native behind. Now Bhandari can file his candidacy in the elections to be held in November.

“This victory is not only of mine rather that of entire Nepali community,” said Bhandari after being elected. He further said that if he got the same help and cooperation from the Nepalis, he will be elected as a member to the Maryland State Assembly slated for November.

Of the total 135,000 voters in the District -8, Democratic Party has 42,000 registered voters.

According to Bhandari, Asian voters account for six percent of the total voters in the constituency. With 80 percent Whites in the constituency, Bhandari is contesting the elections from the group led by Kathy Klausmeier, a renowned senator of Maryland State Assembly.

All the team members associated with Kathy Klausmeier have been elected in the primary elections. Kathy is considered as the most influential leader of the founding panel of the Democratic Party. Apart from Bhandari, Eric Bromwell, Karl Jackon and Jo Henry have also been elected.

Already served the party under various posts, Bhandari also represents teachers’ wing from Maryland.

He is also the secretary of the National Democratic Youth, member of the American Teachers Union representing Maryland and a board director of the minority caucus of the Democratic Party.  

He had launched a campaign ‘Nepali for Hilary’ during the presidential elections.
