44 footballers selected in preliminary phase

KATHMANDU, March 13: Nepali national team's newly-appointed head coach Gyotuki Koji from Japan on Sunday announced a 44-member preliminary football squad for a friendly match against Malaysia U-22 team slated for March 27 in Malaysia.

According All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), the final 23-member squad will be announced later on. The training for the match will start from Tuesday at the ANFA Complex, Satdobato.Koji picked up all the members of the team that featured in the SAFF Championship, Bangabandhu Gold Cup and the 12th South Asian Games. Some of the members have been included following the coach's observation of the Simara Gold Cup that concluded in Simara on Saturday.

Among the 44 members of the preliminary squad, there 12 defenders including Rabin Shrestha, Biraj Maharjan, Ananta Tamang, Aditya Chaudhary, Jitendra Karki, Ranjit Dhimal, Kamal Shrestha, Man Bahadur Tamang, Devendra Tamang, Bijay Dhimal, Ajit Bhandari and Dinesh Rajbanshi.

Similarly there are eight forwards in the squad in Anil Gurung, Nawayug Shrestha, Bimal Gharti Magar, Ranjan Bista, Suman Lama, Karna Limbu, Bishwas Shrestha and Bharat Khawas.

Meanwhile, Bikesh Kuthu, Kiran Kumar Limbu, Amrit Kumar Chaudhary, Alan Neupane and Bishal Shrestha are the five goalkeepers.

Similarly, Koji picked up 19 midfielders including Jagajeet Shrestha, Bishal Rai, Anjan Bista, Heman Gurung, Bikram Lama, Yogesh Gurung, Nabin Lama, Rohit Chand, Jangbu Sherpa, Prakash Budhathoki, Sunil Bal, Tej Tamang, Tanka Basnet, Rajendra Rawal, Shyam Nepali, Sushil KC, Sujal Shrestha, Rupesh KC and Shiva Shrestha.

Although, Rohit, Ananta, Bimal and Anjan have also been picked up in the squad, they will not be available for training due to various commitments and injury, according to the ANFA.
