Greenland into quarters
KATHMANDU: Greenland and Golden Peak on Saturday entered the quarterfinals of the Second NEA Cup Inter-school Basketball Tournament. In the match played at the court of Nawajeevan English Academy, Greenland defeated Kathmandu Valley 22-13 with eight points from Milan Puri. Anis Thapa Magar´s 13 points guided Golden Peak to a 22-15 victory over TIA. In another match, Forward edged past host NEA 34-28. In the girls´ section, TIA thumped Abhiyan 32-18, while Bagmati beat Third Eye 26-12.
Three share lead in chess
KATHMANDU: Bijay Dangol, Prashant Thapa and Dinesh Shrestha share the lead in the Inter-school Chess Tournament after the completion of the fourth round on Saturday. All three players have four points each, while Bina Jaiswal, Manoj Maharjan and Milan Lama are tied for the second position with 3.5 points each.
Puri wins chess title
KATHMANDU: Rajan Puri on Saturday won the Second Rapid FIDE Rating Chess Tournament. Puri, who remained undefeated in the five-round tournament, bagged Rs 3,000 as the winner. Former Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali finished second with four points and 13 progressive. Nepali received Rs 2,000. Veteran Olympian Rajendra Prasad Shrestha finished in the third position with four points and 11 progressive. He received Rs 1,000. Altogether 25 players had participated in the one-day tournament.
Nepal takes on Bahrain Sunday
KATHMANDU: Nepal will take on Bahrain on Sunday at the Kinrara Cricket Ground in its second match of the ACC U-16 Elite Cup being held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Nepal had started the tournament with a 78-run victory over Kuwait on Friday. Bahrain lost its first match against Malaysia by 43 runs on Saturday.
Nepal had defeated Bahrain by 85 runs in the first edition of the ACC U-16 Elite Cup held in Nepal in 2010. Nischal Pandey had scored 74 runs and grabbed five wickets in the match. Current players Dipendra Chand and Jagdish Chand were also part of the Nepali U-16 team that beat Bahrain.
Nepal had finished second in the 2010 tournament after losing to Singapore in the final.
Host Amarsingh starts on a winning note
KATHMANDU: Host Amarsingh Adarsh Club A started on a winning note in the First Amarsingh Cup Seven-A-Side-Football Tournament that began from Saturday at Somtirtha ground of Mulpani VDC-1.
Inspired by Anil Thapa´s hat-trick the host thumped Mysterious Club of Mulpani 7-1 to book quarterfinal place. Puskar Thapa, Subash Thapa, Thakur Shrestha and Kailash Rai also scored one apiece for the winning side. Parmeshwor Dawagi scored the consolation goal for Mysterious. Earlier, ANFA vice president and spokesperson Lalit Krishna Shrestha inaugurated the tournament.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Shrestha said ANFA was looking for an appropriate site for construction of an international level stadium and the ground of Mulpani could be an option.
