Ward member released on bail

RUKUM, May 8:  After spending 25 days in prison, Rudra Bahadur Sunar, a ward member of Sisne Rural Municipality, who was arrested on the charge of impregnating a woman of his own locality has been released on bail.

Police had also arrested his two wives for their alleged involvement in the crime. A case was filed against Sunar on May 4 for forcefully impregnating a woman of Sisne-3, Pokhara and later forcing her for an illegal abortion. As per the statement of the victim, Sunar had persuaded her to have sexual intercourse with him assuring that he will later marry her. Police inspector Diwakaran Pokharel informed Republica that Bimala and Badeni, the two wives of the perpetrator were also kept under judicial custody for 25 days.

 Sunar paid Rs 9,000 while his wives had to pay Rs 5,000 each to the District court for bail, according to Khum Prasad Bhandari, registrar at the District Court. "This case is not resolved yet," said Bhandari, adding, "It is still in the process." As per the officials of the court, it is not necessary to keep Sunar in judicial custody for any kinds of investigation as it can be done even after his bail. "He will be sent to jail only after his crime is proved," Bhandari added.

 Sunar has two wives, four sons and three daughters. The victim has also stated that Sunar threatened and compelled her to take various medicines for abortion. According to police, the abortion was carried out on April 4. The victim filed a police complaint on April 5. Sunar was elected as the member of the ward in the local elections from CPN (Maoist Center).
