DOLPA, April 29: Karnali Academy of Health and Sciences (KAHS) in coordination with the Nepal government has started a free treatment camp from Friday for the women of Dolpa who are suffering from uterine prolapse and other related diseases.

A team of 11 doctors including child specialists, gynecologists among others reached Dolpa for the first time to provide free treatment and other services to women suffering from uterine problems, according to Dr Anup Mangal Samal, medical surgeon of KAHS, Dolpa. He said that the main purpose of conducting the camp was to provide free uterus treatment to women from the poor and marginalized communities.

The team had planned to conduct surgery of a total of 10 women but they had to operate on five women on the very first day, said Dr Samal. He further added that that so far, only seven women with uterus related problem have come in their contact, but more women are expected to come to them by the end of the camp.

The team will not just conduct surgeries for uterine prolapse but will also treat various problems related to women health. There are a lot of women in the rural parts of the district who keep struggling with their illness as they cannot afford treatment. When these women heard from the health workers that they will receive free treatment, a large number of women reached the camp by putting aside their important works.

Chirring Kyamu Rokaya, 46, of Kaike Rural Municipality is one such woman who reached the District Hospital expecting to get free treatment for her illness. "I gave birth to eight children of whom three died due to various problems," said Rokaya, adding," I started suffering from uterus related problems from the time I gave birth to my first child."

Regardless of the long distance, geographical barriers and other hassles, a large number of women have managed to reach the district hospital for treatment.  The women living in high mountainous region have heavy loads of work; they engage themselves in back breaking work immediately after giving birth and also don't eat healthy and nutritious diet. This, according to the health posts in the district, is the reason why more than 30 per cent of the women suffer from uterus related problems.
