Indian teams win South Asian regional qualifiers

KATHMANDU, April 28: India has won the South Asian Regional Qualifiers Tournament for the ITF Asia U-12 Team Tennis Championship on Friday by defeating Nepal 2-0 in both girls’ and boys’ categories. 

In boys’ singles final played at the Satdobato Tennis Court, India’s Harsh Fogat beat Nepal’s Aki Zuben Rawat 7-5, 6-1, while India’s Bansh Nanda saw off Aarav Samrat Hada 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the title. 

Likewise, in girls’ singles final, India’s Durganshi thrashed Nepal’s Aza Regmi 6-0, 6-0, while India’s Anjali Rathi was declared the winner as Nepal’s Shubanghi Laxmi Shah was retired hurt when the score was 6-0, 3-1. 

Despite the loss, both the boys’ and girls’ team have been selected for the ITF Asia U-12 Team Championship, which will be held in Kazakhstan from November. The finalists of the qualifiers will advance for the championship. Only the Nepali boys’ team was qualified in the last edition. 
Also, Pakistan became third in boys’ category, while Sri Lanka stood third in girls’. In boys’ category, Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 2-0, while Sri Lanka defeated Bhutan with the same scoreline in girls’ category. 

A total of 15 players from five nations took part in the five-day tournament.
