ILAM, April 23: The departmental team Nepal Police Club stormed into the quarterfinals of the ongoing fourth International Invitational Tuborg Mai Valley Gold Cup football tournament with the help of two injury time goals from Suman Lama and Rabi Paswan on Sunday.

Police defeated India’s Durgapur Steel Club 3-1 to reach the last eight.

Rejin Subba gave Police the lead in the 36th minute, but Durgapur replied in the 45th minute through Nigerian player Sagaun to level the score at the end of the first half.

Sagaun directly converted a corner kick to equalize for the Kolkata-based team.

Police was rewarded a penalty kick after Durgapur’s Nigerian player Emmanuel fouled Santosh Hemrun inside the box in the second half injury time. Suman Lama scored from the spot to make the score 2-1.

Police looked more comfortable with the ball after scoring the second, as Lama started the buildup with Tej Tamang and Subba’s swift passing movement.

Rabi Paswan, then utilized the final pass from Subba to the third and seal the game. Police kept Durgapur under the pressure throughout the match.

But Police threw away many chances. Most notable was when Police’s Hem Tamang’s shot was brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper Bittu Kisku.

Subba was named the man-of-the-match. He bagged a purse of Rs 10,000.

Police will now take on Ruslan Three Star Club for a place in the semis on Thursday.
