6 among 7 bodies retrieved from Mai River boat capsize identified (update)

ILAM, Oct 15: The identities of six victims among those killed in the Mai River boat capsize have been established.

According to District Police Office, Ilam, the deceased have been identifed as Jas Bahadur Rai, 75,  Dambarmaya Magar of Mahamai-1, Pabitra Paudel, 39, Harka Bahadur Magar, 58 of Mahamai-2, Anjali Khadka, 6, of Madhumalla, Morang and Krishna Ghatane whose address is yet to be ascertained.

The joint squad that resumed its rescue work this morning recovered two more bodes from Sivgunj of Jhapa district at 6 am today. With this the number of those killed in the Mai River boat capsize has reached seve. 

According to Inspector Rudra Chudal,  34 people missing in the boat capsize have been rescued so far. 

A boat with over 50 people including 15 children on board had capsized in the Mai River between Danabari VDC and Mahamai VDC in Illam district, killing 5 people.

The accident took place at 2 pm while the passengers were going to visit their relatives for Dashain tika on Friday.

The capsized boat which was traveling from Danabari to Mahamai was found near Chandalghat - about two kilometers down from the incident site.

A joint rescue team from the Area Police Office, Danabari and Mechi Zonal Police Office, Jhapa, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army had carried out the rescue work.  

The search operation for other missing passengers is still on.
