KATHMANDU, March 30: Responding to the news report concerning the controversial study being conducted by the UN Office in Nepal without prior approval of the government, the UN Office of the Resident Coordinator in Nepal on Friday said that it supports the government of Nepal.

Issuing a press statement, the Resident Coordinator's office said UN closely consults and partners with government in planning and implementing development activities, with the shared objective of a peaceful and prosperous federal Nepal as laid out in the Constitution and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development. "Nepal is a respected member of the United Nations and the UN highly values the long and trusting partnership with government in addressing global challenges on peace and security, human rights and the Sustainable Development Goals," said the statement.

Republica in its Friday's edition had run a story about the UN Office in Nepal conducting a detailed study on highly sensitive political issues such as federalism, identity politics and ethnicity without clearing it with the government. The questionnaire prepared for the controversial study led by UN Resident Representative in Nepal, Valerie Juliand, contain questions such as whether they feel satisfied with the constitution, whether they like the political leaders, which political party they prefer and if they are satisfied with the current demarcation of provincial boundaries, according to sources.
