ITAHARI, March 30: Yet another child has become victim of gang rape. In the latest incident, a group of three men allegedly raped 12-year-old mentallly-retarded girl, a local of Itahari-13.

On Tuesday evening, a group of three men called the unsuspecting child into a shop promising her some food. They reportedly gave her Rs 50 to lure her in. The child was then raped by the three men. The perpetrators are from the same ward.

Police have arrested one of the accused, Avinash Sardar, 18, a construction laborer. Police said they have intensified search for the two others.

The victim has already returned home after undergoing treatment at a health center.

The incident happened just a few months after another child was raped in Itahari-2. On December 31, a 16-year-old girl was raped by three men.

However, that incident was allegedly settled out of the court through police mediation. After police failed to receive a complaint about the rape, two policemen -- Superintendent of Police Bidyananda Majhi of District Police Office, Sunsari and Inspector Chiranjivi Dahal of Itahari were suspended.

Incidents of rape and gang rapes are increasing in Sunsari. In the current fiscal year alone, 20 rape incidents have been reported, according to police data. And in the past four years, 162 rape cases have been recorded in the district.
