Rural municipality to hike allowance for women delivering at health centers

TERHATHUM, March 19: With the objective of encouraging women to give births at birthing centers and health institutions, Menchyayem Rural Municipality of Terhathum has decided to increase the motivation allowance for such women. As per the decision, an additional Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 -- depending on the distance of their homes from the birthing centers or health institutions- will be provided to such women.

Such women from the then Morahang VDC will be provided Rs 1,000 while the women of Shreejung and Pauthak will receive Rs 1,500 extra as the motivation allowance, according to Yadav Bahadur Khapung, chairperson of the rural municipality. He further said that this decision was taken by the first village assembly with the aim to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates. 

In the hilly region, expecting mothers who give births at health institutions are provided with Rs 1,000 as motivation allowance and Rs 400 as transportation allowance by the government. But the rural municipality has announced to provide additional money to such women.

With this, the rural municipality has also announced to provide Rs 1,000 per year to the elderly above 85 years of age as an honour. The first village assembly of the rural municipality has sanctioned a budget of Rs 161 million for recurrent expenditure and Rs 6.5 million for capital expenditure.
