KATHMANDU, March 19: Police have started an investigation into a molestation case filed by a student of Gyankunj School against Shiva Karki, principal of the school and president of the Lalitpur chapter of the Private and Boarding Schools' Organization Nepal (PABSON).

Karki was arrested on Friday after a 10th grader of the school filed a complaint against him, accusing him of sexual misbehavior at the school hostel on Friday evening, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Binod Silwal of the Metropolitan Police Circle, Satdobato. "The court on Sunday remanded him to five-day judicial custody. We have registered the case as an attempted rape and have started an investigation," said DSP Silwal.

According to police, the girl and Karki went through separate medical check-ups at Thapathali Maternity Hospital and Patan Hospital, respectively, but the reports are yet to come.

It is learned that PABSON officials met the girl's family members on Saturday and urged them to withdraw the complaint against Karki. However, the girl's family filed the police case Saturday evening.
Family members said that they agreed to keep the girl at the school hostel after Karki asked them to do so to improve her studies. "Principal Karki assured us to meet all her expenses except for food as our economic condition is not very good."

The girl didn't like staying at the hostel. She has claimed that she was sitting in the balcony in despair on Friday evening when Karki came closer to her and tried to kiss her. But Karki let her go after other students reached there, according to the girl's family members.

The girl's relatives have accused Karki of manhandling them when they were talking to him after the incident.

However, Principal Karki has claimed that he did not intend to misbehave with the girl but just tried to sympathize with her while she was in despair, according to the police.
