Such containers will be placed in open spaces where the hotels, restaurants and malls can dispose of their garbage. [break]
The KMC has also issued directives to its ward offices to find places to put the containers.
The KMC says that people who are unable to present garbage in KMC´s vehicles can dispose of garbage in the containers. “But they should dispose before seven in the morning,” Rabinman Shrestha, an official at the Environment Department said. Shrestha said KMC is aware of possible public outcry over placing garbage containers near the settlements.
He said the ward offices of KMC are working to find open spaces to place containers and such areas will be developed as green zones. Two to three containers will be placed in each ward of the metropolis. The containers placed at New Road and other city centers have already been removed.
The KMC has recently fined more than two dozen errant traders for throwing garbage on the street.
"We have started to fine the traders of city centers and shopping malls who are caught throwing garbage on the street," chief of Environment Department Shantaram Pokharel said. The security personnel of KMC have caught traders of Kathmandu Mall and Suraj Arcade while they were throwing garbage on the street.
The KMC has slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on traders of Kathmandu Mall and Rs 10, 000 on those of Suraj Arcade. Traders of Kalimati, Thapathali, Sundhara, Hanumandhoka were also caught while throwing garbage on the street.
“The KMC will increase the fine for breaching KMC directives,” Pokharel added. As per the regulations, the KMC can charge up to Rs 100, 000 to the people who are caught throwing garbage on the street. The chief district officer can also send them to jail up to three months.
