KATHMANDU, Feb 16: The Embassy of Japan and Nepal Disabled Women Association (NDWA) signed a grant agreement worth Rs 9 million for the construction of a rehabilitation center in Kathmandu for female victims of violence with disabilities.

Japanese ambassador to Nepal Masashi Ogawa and chairperson of NDWA Nirmala Dhital signed the grant agreement amid a function on Friday.

According to a press statement issued by the embassy, the 'Project for the Construction of a Rehabilitation Center for Women with Disabilities in Kathmandu Metropolitan City' is funded under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) for the current fiscal year.
“The project will support the construction of the second floor of a rehabilitation center for female violence victims with disabilities,” the statement said.

The center's ground floor has already been built with the support of the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, and other organisations.
The GGP fund will be used for building the second floor that will have a multi-purpose room, a kitchen, a dining room, storage, office space, and toilets, as per the statement. After the completion of the project, the residents of the rehabilitation center will move into the premises where they will receive treatment and social support.

The NDWA runs a rehabilitation center in a rented space and the financial obligations arising from this has made it difficult to respond to the increasing demands of services for victim with disabilities, say NDWA officials.

The embassy stated that the project will contribute toward assisting female violence victims with disabilities to recover and to become self-sustained in Nepal while also further enhancing the bilateral relationship between Japan and Nepal.
