SPORTS BRIEFS: Chakratirtha Cup Chess

KATHMANDU, Oct 21: Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali and former champions Surbir Lama and Nabin Tandukar started Chakratirtha Cup FIDE Rating Chess Championship on a winning note on Friday.



Nepali defeated Sushil Chaudhary in the first round of the championship organized by Berojgar Yuva Samuha while Lama edged past Lakshu Bhandari. [break]



Tandukar beat Hari Bahadur Maharjan in the first round. Likewise, Surendra Prasad Shrestha, Neeraj Niraula, Madan Krishna Kayastha and Rabindra Shakya also won their respective matches in the first round. Altogether 84 players, including 41 rated players have been participating in the tournament.



Chhantyal moves on top


KATHMANDU: Govinda Chhantyal of Nepal Chhantyal Sangh moved to the top on Friday after the completion of the second round of the Open Archery Tournament being held in Kathmandu. Chhantyal added four points to his overnight score of two points to go to the top. He received Rs 15,400 as the best archer of the day. Overnight leader Urgen Gurung of Lochhudan Samaj, Mustang could not add any points to his overnight score and is placed in the second position along with Tilak Man Pun of Myagdi Magar Samaj. Pun scored three points on Friday. Altogether 77 male archers participated in the tournament organized by Nepal-Japan Contact Committee.



Rastriya Jagriti in final


ITAHARI: Rastriya Jagriti Club, Itahari reached the final of the Third Eastern Regional Rajabas Challenge Cup football tournament being held in Prakashpur, Sunsari. Rastriya Jagriti defeated Sagarmatha Youth Club, Biratchowk, Morang 2-1 in the first semifinal on Friday. Bhola Rai and Kiran Rai scored for the winning side while Karna Limbu scored a goal for Sagarmatha Youth.
