KATHMANDU, Sept 30: CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal has accused the prime minister of backtracking on his commitments and lying to the people.

"The prime minister had committed to accomplish major tasks of the peace process within 45 days of his assuming the charge. But now he has reinterpreted his own statement," former Prime Minister Khanal told Reporters in Kathmandu on Friday. "The prime minister has lied to the people."[break]

He said such an act by the prime minister has raised a serious question if the present government is committed to deliver peace and constitution.

Asked why the opposition CPN-UML was not extending constructive support to the government in concluding the peace process and drafting constitution, Khanal said the government should either be ready to accept other parties´ proposals or should come up with its own. "But as of today, the present government has neither come up with its own proposal on concluding the major twin tasks nor is it ready to move ahead as per our proposals," he said.

He claimed the truth is not that the opposition parties are reluctant to support the government but the other way round.

´Sack defense minister immediately´

Khanal said Defense Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari´s remarks were traitorous on account of which he has lost the moral ground to continue in the office.

"Any minister who gives such a statement should not be allowed to be a part of the cabinet, therefore, the prime minister should sack him immediately," said Khanal.
