KATHMANDU, Feb 1: The Kathmandu District Court has extended the judicial remand of 14 foreigners and three Nepali citizens arrested from various hospitals in the capital on the charge of working without permission. The court has remanded them in custody for seven days for further investigation. 

Acting on a tip-off by the Nepal Consumers Welfare Protection Forum, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police in coordination with Nepal Medical Council had arrested 13 Chinese, one Australian and three Nepali citizens after they were found operating hospitals and treating patients without seeking permission from the council. 

All of the 14 foreigners were working as medical doctors in five different hospitals without getting permission from the medical council. Similarly, other three Nepalis arrested were found operating the hospitals illegally. 

Mina Kumari Shrestha, the operator of Apollo International Polyclinic, and eight Chinese “doctors” working in the hospital were arrested from Thamel. Likewise, operator of CIWEC Hospital, Lainchaur Pratibha Pandey and Australian citizen Sarah Anne Kemp working as a doctor in the same hospital were also arrested on Monday. 

Likewise, two Chinese working as doctors at China Great Wall Health Center, Boudha have been arrested along with the hospital operator Narayan Timalsina. Similarly, two Chinese from China People's Hospital and a Chinese from Chinese Dental Hospital were arrested on the charge of practicing medicine without seeking permission from the council.  

The consumer forum had filed a complaint at the medical council stating that the hospitals running without due permission and have been using 'fake doctors', cheating millions of rupees from patients.
