DHANKUTA, Jan 19: Following yesterday’s curfew, local administration issued a prohibitory order and stepped up its efforts to avoid unforeseen incidents by adding security personnel in the district.

A district security committee meeting decided to lift the curfew and issue a prohibitory order, Prem Prakash Upreti, chief district officer said adding that another meeting at 11 AM would decide whether to lift or continue with the order.

While the order was especially for protestors, it however, has curbed minimal movement of residents to market places, shut down transportation and educational institutes. Police have also requested locals to stay indoors.

Legal provision allows people to shop and move in a group of five during prohibited time. “However, the police are forcing everyone to stay indoors,” Indramani Parajuli, provincial parliamentarian said.

Assemblies and rallies in four areas of Dhankuta municipality; Atmara, Chirbire Chautari, Thursday Hat and Kagate have been prohibited. “However, we have asked the police to allow partial movement to shops,” Upreti said.

Despite the Order, youths have burnt tires in market areas. “If the police continue to suppress us, we will breach the Order and resort to street to protest,” Sundar Babu Shrestha, coordinator of struggle committee said.

The local administration imposed a curfew yesterday following the clash between the police and the protestors who opposed the decision of the government to fix Biratnagar as the temporary capital of Province 1. Nine people were injured in the clash while six government offices were vandalized.

To ensure security, local administration had requested additional security personnel.

“200 police have been deployed in the district,” SSP Hari Prasad Pal, chief of Koshi regional police office said. In addition, the Armed Police Force from Barah Bahini Pakli has also been deployed in the district.
