Sunsari XI wins Falgunanda Gold Cup

PANCHTHAR, Jan 1: Sunsari XI clinched the title of 9th Falgunanda Gold Cup Football Tournament defeating Morang XI with 2-0 in the summit clash on Sunday. 

Tirtha Basnet and Suraj Sunuwar struck one goal each for Sunsari in the final match played in Phidim, Panchthar. Champion Sunsari bagged a purse of Rs 300,000 while runner-up Morang received Rs 200,000. 

Both sides failed to produce any goal in the first half but Sunsari dominated the second half with both Basnet and Sunuwar finding the net.  Basnet broke the deadlock in the 67th minute scoring off a corner kick coming from Saujan Yakha. It was Basnet’s fifth goal in the tournament. Yakha once again created the goal, and this time he assisted Sunuwar who made 2-0 in the 86th minute. Scorer Sunuwar was declared the man-of-the-match and was rewarded with Rs 10,000. 

Meanwhile, Sunsari dominated the individual prizes with Hemanta Thapa Magar, Tirtha Basnet, Bibash Chaudhary and Nishan Limbu winning the best player of the tournament, the highest scorer, the best goalkeeper, and the best forward titles, respectively. Likewise, Shyam Manandhar of the same team was recognized as the best coach. Morang’s Surendra Khawash and Buddhiman Rai were declared the best defender and the best midfielder, while host Phidim Sporting Club’s Akash Rana was adjudged with the rising player award. 

The best player of the tournament Magar and the highest scorer Basnet were rewarded cash prizes of Rs 30,000 and 15,000 respectively.  Similarly, other best players and coach along with the rising player were given cash prizes of Rs 10,000 each.  A total of 10 clubs had taken part in the tournament organized by Phidim Sporting Cub.
