APF, TAC win national volleyball titles

POKHARA, Dec 31: The departmental teams Armed Police Force (APF) and Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) have won the 21st Women’s and 31st Men’s National Volleyball Tournament under the National Sports Council (NSC) Championship on Saturday. 

In the final matches played at the Pokhara Stadium, the APF defeated the Central Region in straight sets of 25-18, 25-14, 25-10 of the women’s category. Likewise, the TAC beat the APF in straight sets of 25-12, 25-23, 25-15 of the men’s category. 

The winners of the tournament in both the categories bagged Rs 50,000 each. The runner-ups were prized with Rs 30,000 each. 

The another departmental team Nepal Police Club (NPC) and the host Western Region claimed the third places of the women’s and men’s categories respectively. 

In the matches for the third place, the NPC defeated the Western Region in straight sets of 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 of the women’s category. Likewise, the Western beat the NPC 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-16, 18-16 in a competitive match. 

The third-placed sides got Rs 20,000 each. 

The TAC’s Man Bahadur Shrestha and the APF’s Saraswoti Chaudhary were rewarded with the best players of the tournament in men’s and women’s category respectively. Both the players took home Rs 15,000 each. 

Meanwhile, Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA)’s Vice-president Yam Gurung, while addressing the prize distribution ceremony, said that altogether 25 players will be selected from all the eight teams of both the categories. Then, the players will be trained in a closed-camp and 12 players each from men’s and women’s categories will be selected for the national teams. Gurung added that the national teams will participate in the Asian Games and South Asian Games (SAG) representing Nepal.

Meanwhile, the Central Region’s Arhanta Keshar Simha and Bhawana Sunuwar claimed the gold medals in the singles of the 10th National Squash Tournament under the National Sports Council (NSC) Championship on Saturday. 

In the final match played at Satdobato of the men’s singles category, Simha defeated the Western Region’s Amrit Thapa Magar 8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7. The Central’s Chhiri Lama and Rajendra Shakya claimed the third place.
