KALIKOT, Dec 14: Residents of Khandachakra Municipality-1protested in district headquarters on Tuesday after a pregnant woman died in hospital. The protestors accused doctors at the District Hospital of negligence and demanded action be taken against the doctor.

Protestors claimed that Chandra Shahi, who was admitted to the hospital after labor pain, died due to the negligence of the doctors involved in her surgery. Shahi died due to postpartum hemorrhage. Irked relatives and locals have submitted their demands to the DAO and even sent a copy of their demands to the health ministry. In the letter, they have demanded stern actions be taken against chief doctor of the district hospital, Kaushal Ali.

The protestors vandalized and later even padlocked the DAO. Krishnakala Pandey, a local women activist stated that the protests would continue until the responsible doctor is punished by the authorities. While accepting the written complaint Chief District Officer Badrinath Gaire assured the protestors of investigating the case and of taking actions against those found guilty.

Shahi was airlifted to Kathmandu following heavy bleeding which the district hospital could not control. However, she died while undergoing treatment at the Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu.

Dr. Ali said that the hospital tried its best to save the mother and child. "She was unable to give birth to her child even after 42 weeks of pregnancy. So, we had to conduct a surgery," he said. "As we couldn't control the heavy bleeding, we chartered a helicopter to airlift the patient to Kathmandu." He is presently under protection of the DAO.

Out of 163 pregnant women admitted at the hospital, three of them were airlifted to well-equipped hospital by chartering a helicopter.
