SURKHET, Nov 16: Locals of Salghari village of Barahataal Rural Municipality in western Surkhet have started homestay facility.

They started the facility to cater to domestic and foreign tourists heading to Rara Lake of Mugu district. Sixteen houses of the village can accommodate 50 guests at a time.
Khemu Poudel, vice president of the Homestay Management Committee, said that local villagers serve local delicacies to tourists as well as entertain them by performing their traditional songs and dances. “Initial response toward our service is very encouraging. Local people are hopeful that the homestay will provide them an alternative source for income generation,” she added. “We will try to make the service more managed and offer quality service to our guests.”

As Magars are the major inhabitants of Salghari, the homestay showcases Magar culture, tradition and lifestyle. The homestay was started in the initiation of Narayan Prasad Sigdel, principal of Janajyoti Secondary School.  “I am hopeful that the homestay will help farmers as they can sell their farm produce to households operating homestay,” he added.
Prakash Adhikari, president of Surkhet Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said the homestay is a step forward toward developing Salghari Sundwari as a model eco-village. He further said efforts were underway to develop Kalidmar of Bheriganga, Nayagaun of Birendranagar and Salghari of Barahataal as model eco-villages.

Similarly, Tej Bahadur Basnet, chairperson of Barahataal Rural Municipality, said that tourists can enjoy wildlife, lush forests, terraced farmland and beautiful settlement at Salghari homestay. He also added that the rural municipality has allocated separate budget for tourism promotion.
