GMR buildings set on fire

SURKHET, May 22: An unidentified group on Sunday afternoon set ablaze three buildings of Indian power developer GMR in Paltada area of Dailekh district. The GMR is currently carrying out construction of Upper Karnali Hydropower Project.



According to GMR´s liaison office in Surkhet, the unidentified group barged into the premises at Paltada at about 4 pm and set ablaze all three office buildings of the company. [break]



The office security guard Nara Bahadur Bohora and trade union leader Toya Bista were injured in the attack, according to assistant manager of the GMR Pradip Nepal. Nepal said eight other staffers including Bhakta Raj Joshi, Kuwad Deep Shree Bastab, Matrika Khanal have been out of contact since the incident.



According to the company, the lab, office and residence buildings were completely destroyed in the arson. Additionally, a huge quantity of valuable construction materials was also destroyed.



The reason behind the arson and the group involved are yet to be known though there have been unofficial claims that it was carried out over the dispute on the compensation for the land acquired by the project.



Assistant Manager Nepal, however, said, of late, there have been no such demands from locals near the project site.
