Nepali youth cricket team begins Bangladesh tour with defeat

KATHMANDU, Nov 3: Nepal U-19 Cricket Team, which is currently on a tour to Bangladesh, suffered three wickets’ defeat to the home side in their first practice match on Thursday. 

In the match played at Krira Shikkha Prothisthan Ground, Savar, Bangladesh U-19 won the toss and chose to field before bowling out the visitors for 153-9 in the allotted 50 overs. 

In reply, the home team Bangladesh met the target losing out seven wickets in 39 overs. 

Nepal travelled to Bangladesh as part of the preparations for the upcoming ACC U-19 Youth Asia Cup. It will play two more practice matches against the home team. Nepal and Bangladesh are in the same group, A, in the Asia Cup along India and host Malaysia.  

Although Sandeep Lamichhane completed four wickets haul, it wasn’t enough for Nepal to stop Bangladesh from reaching the target. 

Opener Naim Sheikh gave positive start to the home side as he struck 53 off 65 balls with eight boundaries before getting dismissed in Sandeep’s delivery. The other opener Pinak Ghosh made 14 runs facing 9 balls. 

Unbeaten Towhid Hridly smashed 48 runs off 66 balls that included one six and three boundaries. 

Nepal then tried to gain control of the match with Sandeep dismissing Bangladeshi batsmen Afif Hossain (3) and Mohamed Rakib (3) serially. Two other batsmen of the home team including Mahidul Islam Bhuyean and Nayeem Hasan were out for duck. But unbeaten Kazi Anik Islam hitting 18 runs off 15 balls drove the Bangladeshi team to victory. 

Shahab Alam and Pawan Sarraf were the other two Nepali bowlers to claim wickets as they each dismissed one Bangladeshi batsman. 

Earlier, Nepal lost its opener Sandeep Sunar for just one run but his partner Mahamad Asif Sheikh tried to lay the foundation scoring 32 runs in 77 balls with three boundaries. Similarly, Anil Kumar Sah and skipper Dipendra Singh Airee contributed 18 and 16 runs respectively. 

Bhim Sharki was the highest scorer for Nepal with 28 runs off 46 balls, while Pawan Sarraf made 19 runs facing 51 deliveries. 

Kamal Singh Airee made 17 runs in 34 deliveries and lower-order batsmen Shahab Alam and Kishor Mahato contributed six runs each. 

Hasan Mahmud and Kazi Anik Islam pocketed three wickets each for Bangladesh while Nayeem Hasan claimed two wickets. Shakwat Hossain added one wicket for the home team. 

Nepal and Bangladesh will now play on Saturday and Sunday in the remaining practice matches.
