UDAYAPUR: Nine people died on the spot while two were rescued when a Jeep (Na. 1 Ja. 3404) heading towards Okhaldhunga from Katari of Udayapur met with an accident at Thati of Katari municipality-11 this afternoon.

According to the Area Police Office Katari, the jeep fell some 500 meters below the road killing the nine, including its driver Hari Karki. Karki died in course of treatment while an eight-year-old child and a woman were rescued alive by the locals before police arrived, according to chief of the police office Mahendra Kumar Shrestha.

Efforts are currently being made to extract the bodies of the passengers stuck in the cliff. Initial reports say that the reason behind the accident could be excessive load, as a result of which the jeep could not climb a steep road and came backward instead to fall off a cliff into the river below, police said.
