ILAM, April 29: Suman Banstola was nine years old when, on the fateful day of June 17, 2004, he was returning with his mother from Ilam bazaar on a passenger jeep to his house in Mangalbare-6.

Suddenly, shots were fired and one bullet entered the upper part of his thigh. [break]

He was immediately taken to Ilam Hospital. From there, he was referred to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan. “Doctors there advised against immediate surgery as it could pose a risk to his life,” said Suman´s mother Pushpa.

“We took him home but kept worrying about the matter and finally we took him to Biratnagar. The doctors there, too, gave the same advice,” she said. It is yet unclear who fired the shot back then. The District Administration Office and the Maoists continue to trade blame.

“I am sixteen now. I spent seven years worrying,” said Suman, now a tenth grader at Morning Glory School. The bullet lodged in his body has made it impossible for him to participate in extracurricular activities.

“At times, I feel excruciating pain, especially, when something hits the area where the bullet is lodged,” said the boy.
