Top brass commit to hold polls as scheduled

KATHMANDU, Oct 13: Top leaders of all major political parties including Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba expressed their commitment to hold parliamentary and provincial assembly elections with the scheduled date.

In a meeting with the election commissioners leaders said they are fully committed to make the poll a success. At the meeting PM Deuba said the government and his party, Nepali Congress, is fully committed to conduct the elections as scheduled in a free and fair manner.  “The government and my party will fully support the government to make the poll a success,” said the PM Deuba said in the cross-party meeting held in presence of election commissioners.

The commitment from the key leaders comes at a time when speculations are rife that the government is hatching conspires to defer the elections in the context of ruling CPN (Maoist Center) forging pre-electoral alliance with the CPN-UML. The government ruling Maoist and Maoist Center, who is currently heading the Ministry of Home Affairs, the ministry responsible for mobilizing thousands of security personnel to manage elections, are at odd over the home ministry portfolio.

Even after forging alliance with the main opposition UML party the Maoist wants to continue its stake in home ministry portfolio. But the PM is said to be trying to oust Maoist ministers and give home ministry portfolio to Rastriya Prajatantra Party. The RPP has already decided to be the part of government.

At the meeting, leaders from all parties said they are fully committed to hold elections. UML Chairman KP Sharma,
