KATHMANDU, Oct 11: US Green Card holder Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) pilot Aang Noori Sherpa has resigned his post.
Sherpa was paid a monthly salary of Rs 1 million alongside other perks for operating a 17-seater Chinese Harbin Y 12 E aircraft for internal flights. Other pilots flying the same aircraft are paid just Rs 180,000 per month.
Republica and Nagarik had earlier uncovered that NAC top officials had colluded to appoint Sherpa to the post of senior captain despite Sherpa being ineligible for the job.
The NAC Board of Directors had also asked the NAC management to justify his appointment and perks and benefits given to him.
“Aang Noori Sherpa has tendered his resignation,” said a highly-placed NAC source. “He has submitted his resignation to the Operations Department. But the resignation letter has not been forwarded to the Managing Director Sugat Ratna Kansakar. Managing Director Kansakar has to approve his resignation.”
Last month, NAC had 'grounded' Sherpa after he forcibly took his aircraft in the way of an international aircraft which was making its final approach at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
Although the air traffic controller at the TIA asked him to hold his aircraft for some time in Kirtipur sky, asking Jet Airways (B 737) aircraft arriving from Mumbai for landing, Captain Noori had forcibly taken his aircraft in the landing route of the Indian carrier.
The NAC aircraft (Y-12 E) was on its way to Kathmandu from Pokhara.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) had kept the incident which occurred on August 28 a secret.
