26 lawyers become senior advocates

KATHMANDU, Aug 16: A full bench of the Supreme Court (SC) justices on Monday promoted 26 advocates to the post of senior advocate thereby making the number of senior advocates 103 in the country.



The full bench, the highest policymaking body of the SC, decided to promote the advocates after assessing their professional contribution and seniority and on the basis of a report submitted by a committee led by SC Justice Kheel Raj Regmee.[break]

 

Those promoted have spent 15 years or more in the legal profession. The law says that those who have already worked as an advocate for 15 years or more and contributed to the rule of law are eligible for the post of senior advocate, which is an honorary title.



Those promoted are Dr Shanta Thapaliya, Padamraj Kafle, Devendralal Nepali, Ramkrishna Gautam, Shekhar Kumar Joshi, Guna Bahadur Rawat, Raghablal Baidhya, Tej Prasad Kandel, Umeshchandra Jha, Indrajeet Prasad Tiwari.



Similarly, advocates Dharma Prasad Uprety, Ramnath Mainali, Bamdev Sharma, Bijaya Kumar Gupta, Ram Prasad Shrestha, Sushil Kumar Panta, Sita Ram Upadhaya, Tilak Prasad Sharma, Chandramani Neupane have also been promoted. Likewise, Purna Bahadur Chand, Harishankar Niraula, Shambhu Kumar Thapa, Ram Prasad Bhandari, Komal Prakas Ghimire, Surendra Lal Das and Lila Udasi Khanal also got the promotion.



The full bench had formed the Regmee committee to recommend the names for the promotion. SC justices Ram Kumar Prasad Shah and Prakash Wasti were the members of the committee which had submitted its report on Sunday.
